Italy: Cinque Terre

Our start to the adventure in Cinque Terre was a bit reckless since driving a 7.5-meter motorhome is not always easy… As we like the sea, we always try to go along the coast but this time it turned out not to be such a good idea. We ignored some warnings on the road thinking that, as on other occasions, we could pass without difficulty. We found ourselves driving along a narrow road where large vehicles were not allowed but we decided to keep going, oblivious to the surprise that awaited us… Several tunnels excavated in the rock, really really narrow, this kind with traffic lights at each end to indicate the passage because it can only be driven in one direction. To make it worse, one of them had no lights for almost its entire length, which was not short, or at least it seemed never-ending to us. It was like being in the “upside-down” world in Stranger Things… Uff it was scary, I (Rocío) spent half the time with my eyes closed, I thought we were not going to make it. Tom could not close his eyes, of course, but the poor man’s heart sped up! Momento di panico! Lesson learned…

Although the weather wasn’t good, the experience in Cinque Terre was much better. We stopped near Monterosso al Mare in a place with spectacular views.

Our views over Cinque Terre

The area is very well connected by train, it allows you to stop in one of the towns and from there visit the others. We made the hike from Montresso al Mare to Vernazza walking along the signposted path, it takes about 2 hours and it is really worth it, the villages are beautiful and the views are amazing. Of course, it is not easy, there are quite a few slopes and steps, but it’s worth it.

Leaving Cinque Terre, we stopped at La Spezia, but it was more a technical stop than anything else. We thought it was a big city and without much charm so we did not stop to visit it.

Our next destination: Tuscany!

Ciao
