Eslovenia & Austria
June 24, 2018

We can’t believe how quickly the weeks go by, when we realized we hadn’t written anything for 1 month… After leaving the bella Italia, we went to Slovenia. The truth is that we had no expectations because we didn’t know the country at all and we didn’t have references from anyone that had been before. Our first impressions were great, the Slovenians are very friendly and the country is very beautiful, we loved it. We started by visiting the coastal town of Koper where we decided to go to the cinema. There we discovered the reason why the Slovenians have a good level of English in general, because the films are shown in their original language (as they should be everywhere) subtitled in Slovenian. We chose “A quiet place”, I don’t know if you have seen it but the characters speak with sign language, you can imagine our faces when we realized, lucky that it was easy to follow the story! 😂
We spent the following days on a farm in the countryside where we tried some traditional dishes and enjoyed pleasant walks. Although we usually like small, quiet places we decided to pay a visit to the capital, Ljubljana, and we have to say that it was a great surprise. It is a very nice city, with a relaxed feeling (at least in May) and a pleasant atmosphere around the river full of terraces where you can sit down to eat or have a drink.
The best was yet to come. If you ever go to Slovenia, we recommend that you don’t miss Skofja Loka and Bled, for us they have been two of the star stops since we started the adventure. In the first town, we parked our motorhome in a super beautiful location, we were next to a river with a waterfall where there was also a bar with a very nice terrace. The center of the town was only a 5 minute walk away, crossing the river by a quite impressive little wooden bridge. A really nice place that we enjoyed so much that we did not want to leave but, although we managed the water very well at home to extend the stay, there came a point when the tank ran empty and we had to move.
On the other hand, Bled is a quite tourist area but if you go out of season as we did it is not overwhelming at all. Everything is focused around the lake with a curious and beautiful island in the center. You can walk around the perimeter of the lake, sail, do water sports, walk to one of the viewpoints that offer spectacular views… In short, also worth spending a few days there.
Our visit to Slovenia ended in Mojstrana, where we arrived after having some difficulties, you can see it in this video.
We arrived in Austria on May 17th, but we didn’t stay long since we had to be in Munich on June 2nd to catch a flight to England and before that we had to go to the mechanic. Our first visit was Gmünd, we were there only one night but it is a very nice town, with a peculiar castle and natural routes to walk. For fans of cars, the Porsche Museum is also there. Our last stop in Austria was Altenmark im Pongau, we were parked on a farm whose owner is a very nice Spanish woman from Granada. The town is a ski resort and, although it is a nice town, it is full of shops, bars, apartments, hotels, etc.
In the next post we will talk about our journey through Germany and the Czech Republic. Auf wiedersehen!
