Italy: Lombardy region – part 1
March 26, 2018

As we advanced from the previous post, after Florence we went to Lombardy and on the way we found something unexpected, a great snowfall like we had never seen before. A surprise we loved, especially Shiba … Look how she enjoyed it!
Before arriving at our destination, we stopped at Bologna and Modena. The truth is that the two cities are worth a visit, they are not small but still retain their charm. It is worth strolling through its narrow streets, stopping at one of its bars and tasting its famous “aperitivos” or sausages. The pity is that after the nice walk we had in Modena, we discovered that someone had broken a window of the motorhome… Luckily they did not enter, but we still haven’t had the glass replaced, the trouble of having an American motorhome from 1994!
The next part of the trip was special, not only because we discovered the beautiful region of the lakes, but also because we did it in the company of Rocío’s parents (Montse and Enrique). We went to pick them up at the airport and went straight to Lago d’Orta, from there we visited the beautiful town of Stressa on Lake Maggiore, ideal point to go sailing through the lake and discover the Borremeas Islands (although we settled for seeing them from the shore…).
Our next stop was the city of Como, the truth is that we think it can be perfectly skipped, although, of course, it has beautiful things like its cathedral and the historic center. Our next base camp was Olginate, it is not a particularly nice place but it has a good area for motorhomes next to the river and it is a good starting point for other visits around Lago di Como.
From there, we took a day trip to Milan. Tom had to attend the official opening of MIA Photo Fair since Gurushots (a company which he has collaborated with for some years) attended as an exhibitor. So we decided to spend the day in the capital of Lombardy. Although we did not think it was an especially beautiful city, its cathedral alone is worth visiting, it’s spectacular. Do not miss its terraces if you go there, it’s the best part.
I think we can say, unanimously, that our favorite place of the week was Bellagio. It is a beautiful town in the central part of Lago di Como, just where the two southern parts meet and offers incredible views of the lake and the Alps.
And this brought our first family visit to an end, we hope there will be many more!
We are now heading to Bormio, near the border with Switzerland, where Tom will hold a photo shoot of the Holy Week celebrations. We will keep you inform…
