Italy: Veneto Region

After Bormio, we had more visitors, this time it was John and Avis (Tom’s parents) who came to spend a few days with us on the shores of Lake di Garda. The truth is that both of them are so charming that it is very easy to have fun with them. We were based in Desenzano del Garda and, from there, we discovered the surroundings of the lake.

The weather wasn’t so good but that did not stop us from enjoying it very much. There are places like Sirmione that, although they are pretty, are quite touristy. There were school groups and ice cream shops on every corner. We also visited Lazise, Bardolino and Saló. We are more fans of quiet places and, unanimously, we decided that our favorite was Saló, a beautiful and super nice town.

Verona was where we said goodbye to John and Avis, the city surprised us positively. The truth is that we loved it. It is a touristy but welcoming city (perhaps because it was still low season) and it is worth visiting its beautiful streets, seating on a terrace in front of its Arena for an aperitif and, of course, tasting some of the Italian delicacies in one of its many restaurants. As a negative point, I have to say that the entrance to Juliet’s museum is disgusting. The walls are full of notes and chewing gum, we do not know if it is something allowed or impossible to control but the truth is that it is a pity to see it like that, it spoils the romantic history of Shakespeare …

Our next stop was Venice, I (Rocío) had been there before but we wanted to go back so that Tom could see the city. Surely many of you have been there so I am not going to say anything new to you. I can not say that it is not a nice place with a lot of charm but it is not our favorite. As we said before, we are more interested in quiet places and if in Sirmione there were tourists in Venice… you can imagine!

After the city of the canals, we made a stop in Bibione. It is avery touristy coastal town. Apart from a huge beach with more than 10,000 umbrellas (we counted them), there are only apartments, restaurants and shops. We were very comfortable the days we spent there, walking along the seafront, enjoying the sun and the terraces of the chiringuitos but I do not even want to think what it will be like in high season, unbearable I imagine…

Our last visit in Italy was Trieste, a city that seems more Central European than Italian. It has very noble architecture, a nice square and pleasant atmosphere but we did not see anything special that would make it worth a visit on its own.

In the next post we will talk about Slovenia, the country in which we are now and that we love.
